Why My Purse is Green

Because I believe…

  • the fastest, most effective way to stop polluters is by pressuring them in the marketplace
  • women can be the world’s most powerful economic and environmental force if we intentionally shift our spending to the best green products and services
  • women have the power right now to solve many of our most serious environmental problems by using our green purses to make a difference
  • women must act – intentionally, collectively, and with the full force of our purse power behind us – if we hope to leave our children and grandchildren a better world.

    April 01, 2009

Win a Free Copy of Big Green Purse!

It's Earth Month! Win a free, autographed copy of Big Green Purse: Use Your Spending Power to Create a Cleaner Greener World.

How? Many people want to go green but worry about the cost. In fact, eco-living can actually save you as much as $4,000 a year! Show how much money you save this month by going green. If you save the most, you'll win a copy of the book. Two runners up will receive cute green purse key finders.

    Purse money  Why bother?

People think going green is really expensive. Most of the time, it actually saves you a lot of money. And the money you save, you can spend on items that do cost a slight premium. For example, many people are reluctant to pay an extra $3 a gallon for organic milk. But if they stopped buying bottled water every week (for some people, this could be a savings of $15 - $20), they'd have plenty of money available to shift to organic milk. Going green helps people save money - and shift their spending to products and services that offer the greatest environmental benefit.

Here's how it works: Throughout the month of April, track how much money you save by using less energy, buying less, swapping, conserving water, and taking other steps to reduce your environmental impact. If you need a worksheet, you can download one here.

At the end of April, send a comment here to report on how much money you've saved, including a tally of your specific savings (e.g., $20 on bottled water).  Whoever saves the most wins a free book. Two runners up will get cute green purse key finders (the key finder clips to your keys so you don't lose them in your purse. The "fob" is a cute green purse, just like the one on my book cover).

    Good luck!
